10 Church Etiquette Tips For First-Time Visitors And Devoted Worshippers

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a devoted worshipper, you should be aware of the etiquette and courtesies while attending church. Although some nuances of etiquette vary based on cultures, denominations, and geographical locations, this article covers the general guidelines of what is and is not acceptable in a house of worship.

Church Etiquette Tip #1: Dress Modestly

Different denominations have diverse opinions on what is acceptable attire within the sanctuary. Although some churches have relaxed views on dress codes and say to come as you are, it is still sensible to care about your appearance and look presentable.

Avoid wearing anything that is too revealing, ripped or torn, contains slogans or graphics, or athletic wear like jerseys. Open-toed shoes and shorts are generally not allowed. When in doubt, a collared shirt (either a dress shirt or polo) with dark wash jeans or slacks is a safe choice.

Be mindful of fragrances. If you want to wear a scent, apply only one or two sprays. Wearing a strong scent in an enclosed space may irritate those around you, especially individuals who have allergies or heightened sensitivity to fragrances.

Church Etiquette Tip #2: Arrive Early

Arriving early to church gives you time to converse with friends and family, settle in, and get in to the right mindset for worship and gospel. Arriving to church at least 15 minutes before the service begins is ideal.

Remember to hold the door open if someone is behind you. This small act of courtesy can really brighten someone's day, especially when entering a sacred building where love, respect, and consideration are taught. For more advice on holding doors open for others, read our article Mastering Door Etiquette: When And How To Hold A Door.

If you arrive late, take a seat near the back of the church as to not disturb anyone during the service. You may be able to move up closer during greeting or prayer time.

If no empty seats are available, stand near the back or along the side, allowing other congregants to safely move up and down the aisles.

Considerate Seating Tip: Do not sit in the back row. Keep these seats free for the elderly, people with limited mobility, and parents or families with young children.

Church Etiquette Tip #3: Remove Your Hat

It is good etiquette to remove your hat whenever you enter a private business or place of worship. Some denominations allow hats inside while others do not.

If you are unsure of your church's policy on hats, it is best to err on the side of caution and remove your hat as soon as you step through the doors.

We cover more hat wearing tips in our article Hat Etiquette: When And Where To Wear Your Hat.

Church Etiquette Tip #4: Turn Your Phone Off

Your phone should be turned off or set to silent before you set foot in any place of worship. Ringers and notification sounds during prayer or readings can be disruptive to those around you and anyone who may be speaking.

If you use your phone to read scriptures, be sure that your phone is set to airplane mode, silent, or vibrate to keep distractions to a minimum. An untimely notification from a game or app could pull your attention away from the teachings.

Church Etiquette Tip #5: Food And Drink Should Not Be Consumed In The Sanctuary

The sanctuary is a sacred place. Avoid bringing food or drink inside, especially during service. Dispose of gum in the trash along with any containers, cups, or foodstuffs you may have with you.

Some churches may offer coffee and refreshments in the foyer. If you partake, please try not to take any food or drink out of the foyer. Crumbs have a way of migrating far distances and coffee stains are very difficult to clean.

Church Etiquette Tip #6: Be Welcoming

Greet other members with a friendly hello (or by their first name if you know it). Striking up a small conversation before service with a member of the congregation is a great way to help build community and connection.

During greeting time, shake hands with your neighbours. A gentle smile and some eye contact goes a long way as well. An effective handshake should be firm but not bone-crushing. Learn how to shake hands properly in our guide: How To Shake Hands In A Post-Pandemic World.

If you are not comfortable shaking hands, especially during cold and flu season, let the other person know. Asking for a fist bump instead or politely declining (with a reason, like you are sick or not comfortable shaking hands at that time) is acceptable.

Remembering names can be difficult for some. But not to worry, we have you covered. Read our article 16 Easy Ways To Help You Remember Names for many tips and tricks to help you remember names!

Church Etiquette Tip #7: No Talking During The Service

Once service has begun, remain quiet unless you are invited to speak, sing, or be dismissed. A quick comment or question to your neighbour is fine as long as it does not turn in to a full conversation. Try to speak softly or whisper as to not disturb those around you who may be listening to whoever is speaking.

A newcomer may see someone having a conversation with someone else and assume it is okay to chat during service. This may result in them receiving glaring stares from others who know that that behaviour is unacceptable. Repeated disruptive behaviour can result in people being asked to leave.

Church Etiquette Tip #8: Participate During The Service

Participation during service includes standing, kneeling, sitting, singing worship songs, joining in prayer, and following scriptures. Engaging with the group shows that you are part of the congregation. This builds community and shows respect not only to the church but to those around you as well.

Even if you do not know the songs, or are not comfortable singing, you can mouth along to the words. No one will call you out for not singing your heart out.

Church Etiquette Tip #9: Leaving Before The Service Is Over

If you must leave before the service is over, do so as quietly as possible. There is no need to inform anyone around you or announce that you are going. Make your way to the nearest aisle and straight to the exit.

If you need to take an important phone call, relocate to a quiet place outside of the sanctuary like the foyer, a meeting room, or outside. Church Etiquette Tip #10: When Dismissed, Leave In An Orderly Manner

When you have been dismissed, make your way to the nearest doors and exit the sanctuary in an orderly manner. Wait until you are in the foyer or meeting space before conversing with others.

Be sure to take all items with you including pamphlets, welcome bags, or souvenirs given to you by the ministry team. Check your pockets to ensure you do not leave any personal belongings like your phone, keys, or wallet behind.
