Keeping your fragrances in your bathroom may seem like a great idea. However, you may be unknowingly sabotaging your scents, causing irreversible damage and ruining the fragrance forever.
Here are three ways your bathroom is ruining your fragrances. Be sure to read all the way to the end to find out how you can protect your fragrances and increase their longevity.
Your bathroom can heat up in many different ways. Here are some of the main culprits:
Once warm air reaches your fragrances, energy can transfer through the bottle. This causes the molecules inside the liquid to accelerate. Fast-moving molecules can break down essential oils, affecting the overall scent profile and severely reducing longevity.
Excessive heat can also cause your fragrance to evaporate if the cap or atomizer are not properly secured. If your fragrance evaporates through the atomizer, essential oils left behind can clog it.
This can greatly affect the amount of fragrance expelled when you depress the atomizer.
If you enjoy hot showers, you are subjecting your fragrances to torture. While heat from a hot shower will cause damage, moisture can find its way in to your fragrances via the atomizer or seal.
Once it enters, it will begin to mix with the liquid and oils in the bottle, slowly diluting it until the scent is no longer recognizable.
An easy way to tell if humidity is affecting your fragrances is to inspect the liquid inside. Hold the bottle up to a light source and inspect it for cloudiness and sediment on the bottom of the bottle.
Direct sunlight, combined with heat, can damage your fragrances in as little as 2 weeks. Photo-oxidation from sunlight will destroy the chemical bonds in your fragrances, resulting in weaker notes and sillage.
You may notice the absence of lighter top notes (like florals and citruses) in some of your fragrances that have been subjected to sunlight. If you have, then the damage has already been done. There is no way to rejuvenate or repair a fragrance that has been damaged by the sun.
Fear not, as you can take preventative measure to ensure your fragrances last for many years. Here is what we recommend:
The best place to store your fragrances in your bathroom is in a cupboard or drawer. We recommend keeping the fragrances tucked back, away from the cupboard door or front of the drawer as an extra effort to reduce exposure from heat, humidity, and any sunlight that may seep in through a crack.
As an extra precautionary measure, keep the boxes the fragrances arrived in and store them inside the boxes in the cupboard or drawer. This extra effort will help preserve your fragrances, making them last longer and smell great for years to come.
Move your fragrances out of your bathroom and place them in a cool, dry area. Cupboards, drawers, medicine cabinets, and closets are all great places. If you want to keep them out on display, find a place, like on top of a dresser, that is out of direct sunlight.

Heat, humidity, and light will ruin your fragrances. Protect them by storing them in cupboards, drawers, or in other rooms. Ensure your bottles are out of direct sunlight and inspect them once in a while to ensure they are not evaporating.
Taking these precautionary steps will increase your fragrance's longevity and keep it smelling great for years to come.
