Taking pride in your appearance is a skill that all men should develop. Carefully choosing your outfit for the day could be the difference between being warm and comfortable or shivering all day because you decided to wear shorts in the middle of winter because you wanted to stand out from the crowd.
Throughout your life you'll have to attend different events of varying formality. From simple things like dates and hanging out with friends to company events, weddings, and funerals.
Caring about what you wear is an indication to others that you are aware of the situation and understand that there is an unwritten rule of attire to adhere to.
This article goes over some of the reasons why you should care about how you dress:
Most men don't even think twice about their attire. They grab the same t-shirt and jeans they wore the day before, slap on some runners, and then they're out the door. While that's fine and dandy for most men, a gentleman understands that how he dresses is an important part of how he is viewed in society. His outfit represents his character and who he is.
Aside from your handshake, your appearance is often what sets someone's first impression of you. How you physically present yourself speaks volumes about what you stand for and who you are.
Taking the extra time to ensure you're dressed suitably for the occasion can make the difference between landing that second date with the person of your dreams or getting laughed at by them.
People notice small details, especially those individuals who pride themselves in their appearance—people like managers, CEOs, business owners, and those who appreciate dressing well.
Many people feel insecure about the way they look, that's a fact. We constantly compare ourselves to others, and may wish we were taller, with more muscle, less fat, a better beard (or a beard in general), a different eye colour, and the list goes on. Genetics plays a heavy role when it comes to our appearance. We aren't perfect. Nobody is. And no body is.
While we can't adjust our bodies overnight, we can take steps towards achieving the physique we want. Eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly are both great ways to live a healthy lifestyle and take care of your body; combine that with dressing well and you can woo just about anyone.
Confidence is key when it comes to what you wear. Science has shown that wearing articles of clothing you like increases your confidence. Find clothing that fits both your body type and your budget.
Most importantly, wear clothes that make you feel good! For instance, if you aren't a suit guy, don't buy a suit expecting it to make you feel better.
Finding clothes that fit your body can make you feel like a million dollars. Knowing your sizes is quite simple. Any store that specializes in menswear can take your measurements, typically at no charge. Knowing your neck, sleeve, and chest size can make purchasing a dress shirt easy.
Most off-the-rack shirts in general sizes like medium and large are created to fit a range of body shapes. Being able to find a shirt with your specific measurements makes it look like you had it tailored just for you!
Cleaning out your closet twice a year helps create and keep a versatile wardrobe. As we develop our personal style, there will be articles of clothing we don't wear anymore. If you don't like a certain piece, either donate it or toss it.
You want a wardrobe full of clothing you enjoy wearing, which fits and compliments your body. Twice a year, take all your clothes out and separate them into three piles:
- LOVE IT (self-explanatory)
- LIKE IT (clothing you wear sometimes, but not all the time)
- HIKE IT (clothes you don't wear anymore. Time to donate or throw it out)
While most people are quick to notice the largest pieces of clothing you wear, like a jacket, shirt, or pants, some with a een eye for style will notice the smaller details. These can include watches, rings, colour coordination, fabrics, and even how you styled your pocket square if you're wearing one.
Adding these finishing touches to your wardrobe shows others that you care about details, no matter how small they may be. While not everyone will notice them, the ones that do will pay you a genuine compliment.
What do weddings, funerals, and black-tie events have in common? Dress codes. Knowing how to put an outfit together for events with explicitly stated or implied dress codes shows professionalism, situational awareness, and respect for others.
It can take a bit more time and mental energy to piece together an outfit for these occasions, but when it's all brought together it can look incredible.
Not every place will have a posted dress code, but you should always practice proper hat etiquette. If you are unsure of the dress code, contact the establishment ahead of time and plan accordingly.
There's no need to worry about formal attire at places like pubs or sporting events unless otherwise stated from whoever is organizing the event or whoever invited you.
Wearing a statement piece will help you stand out and be more memorable. We all have that one favourite piece in our wardrobe that we absolutely love. Whether it's a shirt, a watch, signet ring, or even a style of shoes, wear it often and wear it proudly. People will notice and they'll associate you with that look.
Your statement piece could be a unique style of neckwear, Hawaiian shirts, funky patterns, vintage watches, bright colours, but whatever it is, make it YOURS.
Some statement pieces can be family heirlooms passed down from generations. If a family member has gifted you a watch or a ring, wear it with pride. Remember the history that piece has and keep the legacy going.
Wearing a fragrance is an often over-looked part of a mans daily dressing routine. Most men apply aftershave, antiperspirant/deodorant, or nothing at all and head out the door. A gentleman utilizes the power of fragrance and applies just a few sprays to his body.
A fragrance can not only attract the attention of potential love interests but also be a reminder that you look and smell awesome. Sometimes getting a whiff of your own fragrance can help you focus if you are in the middle of an important event or give you an extra boost of energy if you're starting to feel tired.

Some may view valuing your image as vain, self-centered, or narcissistic. Call it whatever you want, but if it makes you feel better, then do it. When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good you do good.
So next time you're putting your outfit together, spend a few minutes in front of the mirror and admire yourself and the effort you put in to your outfit. A gentleman dresses the way he wants to because he's in control of his life. Be in control of your life. Be a gentleman.
