7 Reasons Why You Should Wear A Watch

Some watches are highly sought after by collectors. Some have strong cultural significance, like the Omega Speedmaster, which was the first watch worn on the moon. Others, like the Breitling Navitimer, were used by pilots to calculate navigational distances, speeds, and fuel consumption. Watch collectors often favour specific brands, eras, styles, and designs.

While the common wristwatch has fallen out of popularity over the last few years, it still remains a staple piece in a gentleman's wardrobe. Here are seven reasons why you should wear a watch:

Watches Are The Most Popular Jewelry Option For Men

Men are limited in terms of jewelry we can wear. Aside from rings, watches are the most common piece of jewelry. When worn properly, a watch can elevate any outfit. Think of it like the final piece of the wardrobe puzzle; without one, you feel naked, but with one, you feel fully dressed and ready for the day. With a variety of styles available, you can always find one that complements your wardrobe.

Be thoughtful when picking out a watch. A G-Shock isn't the best choice if you are going on a nice date. A high-end dress watch wouldn't be the watch of choice if you are participating in a triathlon.

Wearing A Watch Shows You Value Your Time

At the end of the day, every watch is a tool used to tell the time, even if it has so many diamonds jammed in it that the hands can't move. Having access to the time of day helps you to figure out how much time you have left until you have to head off to an appointment, how many minutes are left in class, or if you should get your butt in gear and finish something before it's too late.

Valuing our time is one of the most important things we can do. Time is finite, a non-renewable resource we all wish we had more of. When you harness it on your wrist, you are more aware of its passing and can use it more efficiently.

Watches Come In A Variety Of Shapes, Sizes, And Colours

If you can think of a design, it probably exists. Watches come in all kinds of shapes, styles, and colours, from a simple Bauhaus white face with black indices (like a Timex Weekender), to one so covered in diamonds you'd need to hire bodyguards to escort you everywhere you go (any Graff Diamonds watch—some hold the record for most expensive watches in the world).

While you're picking your jaw up off the floor after looking at the prices of GD watches, I can assure you that you can get affordable timepieces for under $500 that will last you many years.

Some reputable entry-level brands include Seiko, Orient, Casio, Citizen, and Timex. Although $500 sounds like a lot of money for a watch, remember that it is a tool, a piece of jewelry, and part of your outfit. If it's properly cared for, it will last many, many years.

Watches Are A Great Conversation Starter

As someone who is interested in watches, you will find yourself staring at what timepieces other people walking by, on public transit, or even in movies and television shows, are wearing. A great way to start a conversation with someone is to ask what's on their wrist.

Most people have a story behind their timepiece and will be more than happy to share it with you. That conversation can open doors to other topics like work, life, family, and goals. Watches Are Functional

Your watch's primary task is to tell you the time. More complex watches may also include stopwatches, chronometers, tachometers, or even calculators. Unlike phones, they can't support games or stream videos. (Future smart watches may be able to, but at the time this article was published, they do not yet have this function.)

If you reach for your phone to look at the time, you may become distracted by a new message or notification. Then, you put your phone away and forget what time it was, and you have to repeat the process.

If you're out with a group or on a date, it can be rude to pull your phone out in front of them (also known as "phubbing") or to repeatedly look under the table. You may get funny looks if you keep staring down there.

When you wear a watch, turning your wrist and taking a quick glance is barely noticeable.

Watches Can Be Passed Down As Heirlooms

If you have, or plan on having, children, a watch can be a gift for them to cherish their entire life. Whether it's a graduation gift, milestone gift, or even an item listed in your will, passing down your treasured watch to your child is a meaningful gift that will continue to remind them of you and the time you spent together.

Does your heirloom watch not tick? Do you need to shake it to get it going? Watches Make You Look More Mature

A watch can be a symbol of maturity. Donning a beautiful timepiece shows others that you are sophisticated and appreciate the engineering and creativity that goes into most watches. Seeing it as a piece of art, jewelry, and/or a tool rather than a social status symbol means that you understand it's value past the price tag.

You don't need a blinged-out diamond studded timepiece to try to impress others. Instead, find something that suits you and your personality. It doesn't matter what other people think of you, as long as you think highly of yourself.

Summary

Next time you see a watch, notice the style, the design, and the person wearing it. Observe the different shapes and sizes of the watches. Since there are such a wide variety of styles, it's rare to find two identical watches in the wild.
